Better aging: story of the trend

A small part of the beauty industry is now not following the path of anti-age, but instead trying to maintain the natural beauty and showing that age-related changes are inevitable for all of us. The term “better aging” was formulated several years ago by a pioneer in the field of the biology of aging and preventive medicine, anti-aging professor Jacques Proust. Backstage Tales discuss where the trend came from and what exactly does “better aging” entail.

Last year, American Allure released a September issue with Helen Mirren on the cover and the main title “The end of anti-age. Our call to the industry”. The magazine’s editor-in-chief Michelle Lee said that they would no longer use the term anti-age.

“Starting with this issue, we are making a resolution to stop using the term “anti-aging.” Whether we know it or not, we’re subtly reinforcing the message that aging is a condition we need to battle — think antianxiety meds, antivirus software, or antifungal spray. If there’s one inevitability in life, it’s that we’re getting older. Every minute. Every second”. – Michel wrote in her letter to the editor.

In fact, the concept of better aging is not new, it is simple and understandable.

“For the proper maturation of the body it is necessary to identify and eliminate the risk factors that can lead to a disruption of the body’s functions or to the disease. Happy aging is mental, social and physical well-being,” says Jacques Proust. “It is important not to fight with signs of aging, but to determine potential risk factors. Obesity, stress, sedentary lifestyle – very few people do understand that these and other factors directly affect the state of the body and appearance. Therefore, the basis for better aging is proper nutrition, prevention and diagnosis of diseases, self-love and sport”.

Adherents of the better aging trend are convinced that going against age is meaningless. The main thing is harmony and acceptance of oneself.

“There is a golden rule: it is the functioning that maintains the condition of any organ. Any unrealised function will cause violations in the appropriate part. Consequently, although with age is does take more effort and requires more motivation, for the organs to function you need to lead an active lifestyle”, Proust is convinced.

By the way, a recent study published in the Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience journal proves that people who feel younger than their age, young at heart, have better memory and generally a good cerebral activity. The study was conducted by Korean scientists from the Seoul National University and the University of Yonsei. In part, the authors believe that those who feel younger, lead a more physically and mentally active life, which in itself is useful for brain health.
