Yet another childhood classic is being brought to life on the silver screen, and this time it’s Dumbo.
This news was first released by Disney back in July 2014, announcing that Ehren Kruger was on board to write the screenplay. It wasn’t until March 2015 that it was established that the director is Tim Burton.
So far the Dumbo line-up consists of Michael Keaton, Eva Green, Danny DeVito, and Colin Farrell. Now, award winning actor, Alan Arkin has joined the cast portraying a Wall Street business man, J. Griffin Remington. Game of Thrones actor, DeObia Oparei, will also be lending his voice as Rongo, a character yet to be established. The film is currently under production in London.
This live-action remake follows the story of former circus star Holt Farrier, voiced by Colin Farrell, who struggles with his return from war. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) hires Holt to care for the new-born elephant, Dumbo. But when Holt’s children discover Dumbo can fly, plans are made to steal him and make him a star by smooth-talking entrepreneur (voiced by none other than Michael Keaton) and an acrobat (Eva Green).
Disney originally sought after Will Smith to play the lead character Holt Farrier, but issues came during negotiations, as the studio and the actor couldn’t agree upon a salary for the remake, as well as there being potential scheduling clashes for Smith. However there is a silver lining. During Disney’s D23 Expo, it was announced that he will voice the Genie in their live-action Aladdin remake.
With the success of Beauty and the Beast, the live action movies are coming in heavy, with The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, and Cruella currently in production.
Dumbo will be hitting cinemas on March 29th, 2019.
