Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is an upcoming fantasy drama film, the sequel to the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a movie franchise that began with the Harry Potter films. The film is produced by Heyday Films and distributed by Warner Bros. This magical sequel will be directed by David Yates, who’s famously known for directing The Legend of Tarzan and a select few of the previous Harry Potter films.
Scripted by Rowling herself, the plot follows Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore as they attempt to take down the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, and face new threats in a more divided wizarding world. According to Digital Spy, “In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.”
This new fantasy features some recognisable faces playing some extraordinary characters. A few of these include: Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander; A British Ministry of Magic employee in the Beasts Division of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, who is also an outcast from certain societies of British Wizarding due to his checkered past. He has played a significant role in remedying the events of a violent attack on the City of New York in December 1926 involving the dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald.
American actress Katherine Waterston plays Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein; a member of the investigative team and Newt’s love interest. Followed by Johnny Depp who plays the villain Gellert Grindelwald; a famous powerful dark wizard who has caused mass violence, terror and chaos in a bid to lead a new Wizarding Order. He shared a mysterious relationship with Albus Dumbledore as a teenager.
Albus Dumbledore will be played by Jude Law; who represents an extremely influential and powerful wizard in the Wizarding Community. He is a strong ally of Newt Scamander’s and holds a mysterious relationship with the dark wizard, Grindelwald. Fantastic Beasts 2 will also showcase Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, Zoe Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, Callum Turner as Thesus Scamander and Claudia Kim as an unidentified Maledictus.
The introduction of another dark family in the Fantastic Beasts series ties in with director David Yates’ promise that the second instalment will be “grittier” than its predecessor. He told Digital Spy, “The first film had a level of whimsy; the characters felt like children in grown-up bodies,” he recently explained. “In this movie, it gets grittier, more nuanced and detailed.” Adding to that, The Crimes of Grindelwald will “surprise” audiences, he said: “It’s quite a romantic film, it’s a thriller it’s quite an interesting combination of genres you rarely see together.”
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is scheduled for release on the 16th of November 2018 however a short sneak peak trailer has been released.
