We were first introduced to Raf Simons’ fixation with pop-artist, Andy Warhol in September this year at NYFW. For his second collection with Calvin Klein, the designer featured Andy Warhol photos screen-printed onto denim jackets, skirts, t-shirts and dresses.

The love affair between Calvin Klein and Warhol however began much earlier than S/S ’18. In the 1970s at the peak of his career, Warhol befriended a new generation of New York designers including Mr Calvin Klein himself. A young Klein was set to capture a new truly American essence in his designs and this appealed to Warhol’s own interests and aesthetic. And now the mutual infatuation has been taken one step further with Calvin Klein announcing a partnership with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, granting the design house unprecedented access to the artist’s works.

‘I’ve come to realise that Warhol’s genius goes much deeper than cheerful Campbell’s Soup paintings,’ said Simons in a statement. ‘He captured all sides of the American experience, including sometimes its darker sides. Warhol’s art tells more truths about this country than you can find almost anywhere else.’

The collaboration will also extend to licensing projects across various business lines and future activations within the Calvin Klein brand until 2020.
