Going for Green: First Glimpse of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch.

Benedict Cumberbatch has become a household name due to the plethora of iconic characters he’s portrayed. He’s shone as Sherlock, freaked us out as Frankenstein, and dazzled us as Doctor Strange, to name but a few. Next on the list for the award winning actor? The Grinch.

One of Benedict’s most famous roles is playing Sherlock Holmes in the BBC Drama Sherlock.

That’s right, after stealing the hearts of many ladies across the globe with his quintessential charm, its time for Mr Cumberbatch to steal Christmas in the remake of the film by Illumination Entertainments.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be voicing The Grinch in a 2018 remake of The Grinch who stole Christmas by Illumination Entertainment.

Whilst Illumination Entertainment CEO, Chris Meledandri, confirmed that Cumberbatch would be reprising the role almost two years ago, the trailer for the film, set to be released in November this year, has just been bought out, providing us with a sneak peak of Benedict in action…

You may be thinking that the actor might be a strange choice for the role but he has previous experience with voice work, starring in Penguins of  Madagascar and The Hobbit Trilogy.

In the latter he took on not just one, but two characters, voicing both Smaug and the Necromancer. He’s also set to star in upcoming, Jungle Book remake, called Mowgli, as Shere Khan, which is set for release in October this year.

In choosing Cumberbatch for the role of the Grinch, Meledandri said, ‘we were looking for a voice to express comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability.’

Despite this experience under his belt and support from Meledandri, Cumberbatch still has big boots to fill when it comes to reprising the role made famous by none other than Jim Carrey. Whilst Carrey’s performance in the 2000 version of the film splits critics, with one even suggesting that, ‘the star ends up hijacking the film’, he still received enormous praise.

Jim Carrey’s performance of The Grinch in the 2000 version of The Grinch who stole Christmas divided critics.

In a review for the Empire Online, Adam Smith describes Carrey’s’ performance as a ‘masterpiece’ and says ‘ With The Grinch he may well have realised the most entertaining, and in the end, almost moving, live action children’s character ever put on screen.’

What do you think? Do you like the look of the new film? Is Benedict Cumberbatch the right man for the job? Will his performance as The Grinch challenge Jim Carrey’s memorable take on this character. I guess we’ll just have to find out…
