LFW: The Ones to Watch SS17

The UK’s largest independent platform for emerging and established design talents during London Fashion Week, Fashion Scout, headed by founder and creative Director Martyn Roberts, announced the four winners of the Ones to Watch for London Fashion Week SS17: Ana Ljubinkovic, Anissa Aida, Billie Jacobina and Ester Kubisz.

There was a long list of emerging designers which were nominated by a panel of industry experts including Martyn Roberts and fashion writer, Tony Glenville, Ones to Watch stylist, Rebekah Roy and Kendall Robbins, British Council’s Programme Manager.

Fashion Scout provides an opportunity for innovative new designers to become fully established labels in the international fashion industry, on a unique globally recognised platform. For example, previous winners include: Georgia Hardinge, Phoebe English, Min Wu, Helen Lawrence and Typical Freaks.

Here’s a look at the SS17 winners:

Ester Kubisz

Ester graduated from Ravensbone in June 2015, later going on to win the Best Garment Award at Mercedes Benz Fashion week Central Europe. She also appeared at Graduate Fashion Week, the On/Off Exhibition During LFW AW16 and later showcased at Fashionclash Festival in July. This put her in good stead of winning Fashion Scout’s OTW.

Along with her achievements, her deconstructed cuts, loose fitting tailoring and her use of contrasting grunge with classic cuts, caught the eyes of the selection panel. Her use of distressed pinstripe short-suits with a classic crisp, reflects her own inspiration for the designs and the message she is trying to portray. She is subtly questioning our need for social conformity and the Western working uniform. Our clothes not only showcase who we are, but provide us with aspiration. The juxtaposition of minimalist cuts and intricate textile embroidery, with attention paid to handcraftsmanship was initially intended to be predominantly menswear but Ester encourages these designs to be used in unisex styling.

Ana Ljubinkovic

Ana Ljubinkovic is a womenswear designer and artist who is based in Belgrade, Serbia. Originally, an art student, she graduated from the University of Belgrade in 2002 with a degree in painting. Shortly after graduating, she decided to enliven her fashion sketches, from her study course. Later on, her first collection was showcased at Belgrade Fashion Week. Audiences have been mesmerised by her paradoxical designs, kitsch, traditional handcraft techniques and choice of pastel pinks, yellows and blues.

Anissa Aida

Anissa is a womenswear fashion design and accessory label that produces collections which aim to boldly demonstrate the interaction between fashion and culture; creating a contrasting image of tradition and modernity, through Anissa’s own Tunisian heritage and Eastern fashion. Her collection considers cuts and silhouettes as well as fabric selection and shades of blue, from pastel to cobalt, achieving both modern sophistication with timeless classics. ne-to-watch

Billie Jacobina

Directed by Billie herself, this brand is based on printed textiles in all its innovation and diversity. Contrasting both traditional techniques and contemporary, the brand has attempted to break the mould within the textile industry by bringing Billie’s very own dreams and fantasies to life through her garments.

Graduating from the University of Creative Arts Rochester and dazzling industry professionals at Graduate Fashion week 2016, Billie won herself the Graduate Fashion Week Residency Award in Jakarta. She is now working on a collaboration with Indonesian designer brand, Lekat for Jekarta Fashion Week.

Having been supported by the British Fashion Council, her collection, ‘C-Lyf’ wowed the panel with her freaky imagination and innovative use of vibrant pops of colour, sequins, and unusual materials.
