The first trailer for I, Tonya has finally landed, offering us a closer look at Margot Robbie who plays a disgraced former figure skater. Is the female villainess becoming the main protagonist in film? Read on to find out!
Robbie plays condemned ice skater, Tonya Harding, and is also debuting her first ever role as a film producer. It opened at the Toronto International Film Festival and was the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award. So, we have high hopes for when it hits UK cinema.
The film is a biography of the highly praised ice skater, Harding. It’s directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers, and will convey details of how Harding went from being a world-class figure skater to almost being jailed.
Harding became internationally famous after overcoming a very difficult childhood and poor background. The film, with its subtle dark humour, depicts her rise as one of ice skating’s most successful individuals. However, her future in the field is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes, causing her world to collide.
Margot Robbie has picked up a lot of buzz for starring in the role and producing the film. The actress, best known for her roles in The Wolf of Wall Street and Suicide Squad, may have a chance at the Oscars for Best Actress. From what we can see in the trailer, Robbie’s character marks the rise of the female villainess. And fans can’t help but mention her physical transformation at the centre of it. Robbie is completely stripped of her classical glamour, some reports have said her transformation is ‘amazing’ and ‘unrecognisable,’ as we see her playing the discredited skater. A positive change to female protagonists who are made out to look perfect throughout films.
I, Tonya reaches UK cinemas 23 February 2018, we can’t wait to view it!
