Last year, we saw some of the best sartorial moments of 2018 at the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination” Met Gala; from Rihanna’s ‘high fashion pope’ to Ariana Grande wearing the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This year, can we expect just as many extravagant outfits? Considering the theme: “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, we tell you everything you need to know and predict what the star-studded hosts will wear on fashion’s biggest night of the year.
What’s the theme?
The Met’s 2019 Costume Exhibition centres around the flamboyant idea of camp. It is inspired by the 1964 essay by Susan Sontag that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” The head of the Met’s Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton, will explore how “camp sensibility” links all the way back to Louis XIV’s French Court – one of which was filled with opulent extravagance. Bolton spoke with the New York Times, saying that we are living in “an extreme camp moment…whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp – Trump is a very camp figure – I think it’s very timely.”
The event will be hosted by the last decade’s reigning queen of camp, Lady Gaga, and tennis icon, Serena Williams. In recent seasons, camp fashion has become almost synonymous with the tongue-in-cheek luxury of Gucci. Therefore suitably, the creative director Alessandro Michele and his muse, Harry Styles, will also be hosting.
What can we predict?
Given the sponsor, I think it is safe to say we may see Harry Styles rocking another one of his signature Gucci suits, with all-over embroidery on both the trousers and blazer. Alessandro Michele’s bold use of patterns and colours has changed the way men dress, transforming from minimalist to maximalist.
Similarly, Michele (pictured above) would be expected to be wearing one of his own suits, sporting a head-to-toe vibrant ensemble of print and couture tailoring.
Recently, we have seen Lady Gaga in different Valentino gowns, from her baby blue tribute to Judy Garland at the 2019 Golden Globes to giant pink feathers at the Venice Film Festival. We can definitely predict that Gaga will not fail to impress in whatever she wears. Whether she carries on her trend and opts for voluptuous Valentino, there are definite promises of bold colours and silhouettes to look forward to.
Lately, we have seen Serena Williams wearing striking gowns in deep, sumptuous hues, such as her crimson and ebony Armani Prive dress at the 2019 Oscars and a stunning black Alexander Wang gown for her interview with GQ. Williams is always elegantly styled so it will be interesting to see her take on this year’s bold and playful Met Gala theme. In keeping with her poised yet punchy sartorial attitude, I could see Serena Williams wearing this Elie Saab sequined blue dress – the arms and embroidered detail add just enough flamboyancy for the theme whilst complimenting Williams’ powerful demeanour.
Whose outfit are you looking forward to seeing most at this year’s MET Gala? We’d love to hear in the comments below.
