With fashion season in full swing and the front rows bursting at the seams with familiar faces, the daily catwalks consists of a selection of models showcasing the latest collections. However, not all appears how it seems.

Despite the obvious glamour that oozes from the modelling industry, individuals regularly face superficial criticism and poor working conditions, not to mention delayed pay packets. It is not to say that this is the case everywhere, it does however seem to be an occurring trend.

For instance, during New York Fashion week, Kanye West showcased his fourth Yeezy collection which was quick to be criticised by those who attended, after models were reportedly falling to the ground after spending over an hour in the ninety degrees’ heat. Dubbed as a ‘Hot Mess’, the show got off to a rocky start with long delays which could only be referred to as classic Kanye. When the show took off, the audience witnessed model Amina Blue strip herself of her footwear after struggling to walk whilst another model powered through the pain with her ankles looking ready to cave. Despite being over ruled by chaos, many were still able to appreciate the timeless beauty of the pieces West had created.

It goes to show that even to this day, the real appreciation of models is not being recognised. Despite being as perfect as dolls, models are still humans and deserve the correct treatment and working conditions, just like any other profession.

With the help of companies, such as ‘The Model Alliance’, models are being supported within the work place. With Sara Ziff, a model herself, representing the non-profit organisation, her mission is to give ‘a face to the faces of the fashion industry’. No longer will models just be a number.
