It has become clear that 2018 is the year of Blockbuster Movies, with our screens already being packed with our favourite stars broadcasted across cinemas. In a year of great movies, this summer is going to be a frenzy of box office sell outs and it’s one that we won’t want to miss.
Starting the season off we were given Black Panther in February and then another Marvel release of Avengers: Infinity War this April. Adding to the super blockbusters, Deadpool 2 hit theatres in early May, and we have just welcomed Solo: A Star Wars Story. This already seems like a pretty good line up, but there are many more where they came from:
Jurassic World 2 – Fallen Kingdom
It’s another return from our favourite prehistoric creatures, although this time Owen Grady has his work cut out for him, saving the dinosaurs from an island that’s about to erupt. (Dino déjà vu?) 3 years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park, the Isla Nublar has boomed with terrifying, new genetically modified breeds. The team are on a ticking time bomb to help save each species, but as they do, they start to uncover a conspiracy that threatens the entire planet. For the 2nd film of the Jurassic World franchise, director J. A. Bayona is back behind the screens, with Steven Spielberg as an executive producer. But the most exciting return will be Jeff Goldblum, back playing Dr. Ian Malcolm. Life most certainly finds a way.
Jurassic World 2 – Fallen Kingdom will be released on the 6th of June 2018.
In an exciting, all female spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Trilogy, Sandra Bullock stars as Debbie Ocean who has been planning the biggest heist of her life for five years, eight months, twelve days and counting. Ocean recruits a team of experts to assist her in robbing the Annual Met Ball, for a necklace worth over $150 million. Alongside Bullock in this impressive cast are Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Helen Bonham Carter as well as a supporting role by James Corden.
Ocean’s 8 will be released on the 8th of June 2018.
A modern day, supernatural horror, Hereditary will be the feature film debut of director Ari Aster. When their reclusive grandmother passes away, daughter Ellen and her family are haunted by the cryptic life she left behind. As they begin to unravel the terrifying secrets of their ancestry they discover more and more about the sinister fate they have inherited. After premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January earlier this year, Hereditary is set to release a nightmare of domestic breakdown and pose questions to the demons we might inherit.
Hereditary will be released on the 15th of June 2018.
The Incredibles 2
After 11 years of waiting, our favourite superhero family is returning with a sequel! The film resumes where the previous ended, with the introduction of The Underminer. The Parr family struggle to live a normal life, when Elastigirl gets called into action to head the campaign to bring the ‘supers’ back. Meanwhile Bob, Mr. Incredible, is left to take on his biggest challenge of all, looking after the kids. I think the main thing we have been waiting all this time to see is the kind of powers baby Jack-Jack will unleash, after being left with a teaser short when the first film was out.
The Incredibles 2 will be released on the 15th of June 2018.
Ant Man and The Wasp
As the saying goes, it takes two – sometimes you need a partner, someone to watch your back. Yet another 2018 film release from Marvel Studios, set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Scott Lang is under house arrest, and tries to balance his roles as a father with his responsibilities of being Ant Man. Presented with a new mission, he joins forces with The Wasp. The urgent mission soon starts to unveil secrets from the past, and the duo find themselves in an epic battle against a powerful new enemy.
Ant Man and The Wasp will be released on the 6th of July 2018.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
I know what you’re thinking, another Mission: Impossible film? It can’t be! The franchise is back with a sixth instalment, and Tom Cruise seems to never be too old to climb across mountains and jump out of moving, exploding vehicles. When an IMF mission ends badly, the entire world is faced with dire consequences. Ethan Hunt finds himself in a race against time, trying to fulfil his original briefing. The CIA begin to question his loyalty and soon Hunt is being tracked down by assassins and former allies while he tries to prevent a global catastrophe.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout will be released on the 27th of July 2018.
With a huge line up of films this summer it is a fear that our summer sun time will be spent camped out at the cinemas! Who needs a tan anyway?
Which film release are you most excited for?
