Princess Diana of Wales is, and always will be, the queen of style whose sartorial stakes will forever reign. The People’s Princess would be fifty-eight years old now, and we envision her rubbing her padded shoulders with the Tilda Swinton, Helen Mirren and Diane Keaton’s of the world – a girl gang everyone would want to be a member of. Below, we imagine what Diana would be wearing today.
ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING BY ZIMMERMANN
The luxe Australian label encapsulates everything Diana was known and loved for in her fashion choices during the 1980s. Playful prints, pussybows and ruffles adorn almost every design and there isn’t one piece by the brand that couldn’t be seen on the Princess.
CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE AW19/20
The opening looks of Virginie Viard’s couture debut for the French fashion house would not look an inch out of place on the Princess of Wales during a winter trip to Balmoral or for mass on Christmas Day.
ALL TIED UP
Aside from her vibrant hued power suiting, the Princess of Wales was also fond of an Annie Hall-esque suit and tie. Burberry’s monogrammed tie and pistachio skirt suit is an ideal option for Autumnal royal commitments, whilst D&G’s androgynous two piece and embellished bow tie would be a surefire stand-out at an evening soiree.
The People’s Princess was doing cowboy boots way before Instagrammers and Ganni. Her beloved shoe silhouette for on-the-go Mum duties is both practical and still bang on trend in 2019 and we can definitely envision her in these Golden Goose tan leather boots (£680).
BASICALLY, THIS ENTIRE GUCCI LOOK
Di’s inimitably cool off-duty look is modernised through the styling of this Gucci ensemble. We think the Princess would most likely wear this whilst she’s travelling, but maybe swap the cat pendant for a string of pearls. Speaking of…
PEARLS ARE A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND
They are this season’s must have accessory, but adding a pearl to an outfit has actually never gone out of style. A jewellery classic that defies age, time and ever changing fashion trends, the Princess would perhaps dip her toe into the world of jewellery brand of the moment, Alighieri.
A FAILSAFE BLAZER
Whether Princess Diana paired it with tracksuit bottoms or a co-ordinating pencil skirt, a blazer was always in her wardrobe – be it double breasted, longline or with contrasting lapels. Similarly to her pearls, an item like this stands the test of time and, considering the Princess’ consciousness to the environment and world around her, we no doubt expect that she would pull out her old faithfuls from the back of her wardrobe. But a little Acne Studios and Karl Lagerfeld never hurt anybody:
Lady Di will forever be a fashion icon and endless source of style inspiration. A quote from Donatella Versace could not put it better:
I don’t think that anyone, before or after her, has done for fashion what Diana did.
