In a coloration with Disney, Rag & Bone have incorporated a Star Wars theme to their latest collection, coinciding with the release of the The Last Jedi.
It’s not unusual for film and fashion to collide. Back in 2015, when Star Wars: The Force Awakens was hitting the cinemas, fashion houses including Rodart, Yohji Yamamoto, Preen, Triton and even Kanye West’s Season 2 Yeezy collection, took inspiration from the franchise, and injected it into their Autumn/ Winter collections. This year it’s the turn of Rag & Bone designer, Marcus Wainwright.
“I’ve always been a massive Star Wars fan personally, and I’m fairly close to the guys at Lucasfilm and Disney for various reasons, and we shot Mark Hamill (who plays Luke Skywalker in the movie) for our Men’s Project last year…It just felt like it would be a fun thing to do.”
This limited-edition range with Disney keeps the definitive Rag & Bone style and entwines it with references to the film series. Contrasting colours of black and beige represent the balance between good and evil in the saga depicting the light and dark sides of the Force, the Galactic Empire vs Rebel Alliance, or the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.
“That was the big challenge to do a collaboration on some Star Wars stuff that felt like Rag & Bone,” said Wainwright, stating that the collection is loosely based on some of his favourite Star Wars looks. There are some printed T-shirts, a men’s look loosely inspired by Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia inspired women’s styles. One T-shirt design uses the phrase from Star Wars IV, “More Powerful Than You Can Possibly Imagine,” and another features an iconic image of two X-wing fighters. There are 22 pieces in all ready-to-wear, footwear, T-shirts and accessories.
The designs incorporated quilting, lacing details with military references, styles already typical of Rag & Bone’s designs. The menswear collection includes an Obi-wan style hoodie and Stormtrooper sweatshirt. For women, there’s a roll neck wool knitted jumper, with a ribbed texture at the elbows, that creates a minimalistic military vibe. Footwear consists of RB1 Force high-top trainers for men and Ellis Force boots for women.
Wainwright’s aim for this collection was to create pieces that the regular Rag & Bone customer would enjoy, as well as Star Wars fans.
Priced from £73 to £986 with only 100 pieces of each style, the merchandise will be released in batches in select Rag & Bone stores and on their website, rag-bone.com. Only select pieces are available on the newly relaunched shopdisney.com site, which launched on the 1st of December.
