This year, Burberry unveiled the founder’s story in the newest Christmas advert, ‘The Tale of Thomas Burberry’.
Last year, Burberry celebrated the Billy Elliot film’s 15th anniversary with their festive campaign. This year their inspiration was the founder of the brand, Thomas Burberry. The Christmas advert is a short trailer of his life written by Matt Charman. The short-film shows Burberry when he invented the water resistant fabric gabardine, when he falls in love, when he dresses soldiers for war and Ernest Shackleton for his Endurance expedition when he meets Betty Dawson and the love triangle between himself, Dawson and his wife. Parts of the plot are fiction, such as the love triangle, but the film is mostly based on real events in Burberry’s life. The movie is directed by Asif Kapadia and is played by talented, British actors. Domhnall Gleeson plays Thomas Burberry, Dominic West plays the polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, Sienna Miller, and Lily James plays fictional characters. Miller as Burberry’s first love and mother of his children and James as Betty Dawson, a character based on the record-breaking pilot, Betty Kirby-Green.
The chief executive officer and chief creative of the company, Christopher Bailey said:
“This Christmas, as we celebrate our 160th anniversary we wanted to tell the story of Thomas Burberry – pioneer, innovator, and the man behind the iconic trench coat – in our own words.”
“The film we have made is a brief glimpse inspired by his full and extraordinary life, which threaded its way through the history of the twentieth century in all its tumultuous highs and lows. To do justice to this story, we turned to a team of the truly great twenty-first century British talent: Asif Kapadia, a director whose work I admire enormously, and a cast of our brightest and our best actors: Domhnall Gleeson, Sienna Miller, Dominic West and Lily James. We feel very proud to be sharing The Tale of Thomas Burberry this Christmas – his spirit and his vision are still at the heart of everything we do at Burberry today.”
The film features beautiful scenes and is very popular among fans of Burberry. So now the question is whether the short film will turn into a longer film, or not… What do you think?
