Surges in weather temperature; 10kg luggage restrictions…Summer dressing can fill us with dread. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 fashion summer essentials you’ll be needing this over the next few months.
Shoes can easily fill up luggage space, so finding a style that can be matched with several outfits is a surefire winner. Our favourites? A classic pair of white trainers. Take the Nike Air Force 1 – lightweight enough for you to throw into a beach bag, chunky enough to give you a bit of height for an evening and supportive enough for an explore around your destination.
Although we all want to get a killer tan when abroad, lying in the sun for hours on end can often leave us red-faced – a nightmare in holiday photos. A simple solution comes in the form of a bucket hat. Yet another 90s reboot, the bucket hat helps block out those harmful UV rays and is a current go to by many designers, nailing this season’s surfer trend. My favourites are the Kangol Flannel bucket hat and anything floral for an injection of colour to an outfit. I’ll certainly be taking mine to both festivals and holidays this summer.
Spilled sun cream, leaky water bottles and lots of sand; picking a functional bag for summer is essential. A tote bag is able to be folded so won’t take up room in your suitcase, and they’re lightweight and roomy, becoming ideal for popping down to the beach or going to a nearby market to pick up some food. I love the beaded tote from Urban Outfitters and the leopard print canvas tote from J.Crew.
There is yet to be a summer when a denim skirt is not essential. A cool, comfy staple that goes with anything and can be worn over and over again as different outfits. Weekday’s lovely Long Denim Skirt with Front Slit would be great for a casual evening by the beach, and the Cargo Denim Skirt from Urban Outfitters has big pockets – perfect for your phone, hotel key and a disposable camera.
Humid holiday weather almost always has a problematic effect on hair. Whether that is frizz or sweat, an easy fix is a hair band to push hair back and hide oiliness. My favourites are Anthropologies Beaded Feather Hairband and Yellow Velvet Hairband.
Boiler suits are a great addition to your holiday wardrobe as they are an all in one outfit – luggage space optimisation, check! They are comfy, stylish and depending on accessories, can be dressed up and down. Check out our article on the Top 8 Boiler suits of SS19.
Going to a restaurant in a bikini is socially acceptable on holiday, but throwing on a shirt creates an effortlessly cool, breezy outfit whilst also giving you a bit of coverage from the sun. Then for the evening, team a printed blouse with some denim for a classic and comfortable holiday get-up.
Sliders are perfect for slipping on and off between the pool and your sunlounger. Adidas sliders are rubber so ideal for walking along the seaside, whereas the cork-soled Birkenstocks are a more formal option that can be worn for evenings out or hikes during the day.
One-pieces have dominated the past few summer seasons and for 2019 they are here to stay. My favourites are printed, cut out (to give the illusion of a bikini but give more security) and off the shoulder silhouettes.
After the long reign of small sunnies, big glasses are back. Protect your eyes with these chunky accessories that add extra sass to any outfit. My go-to styles are the Square Tortoiseshell Sunglasses from H&M and the KOKO Feline sunnies from Topshop.
With these Top Ten Essentials, packing for your summer holidays should now be a breeze. But our number one tip? Bring clothes that are functional, versatile, comfortable and make you feel good.
