The UNDERAGE SS19 collection is inspired by the ‘Club Kid’ era of the late 80s, and early 90s, the title of the collection, ‘Lucid Dreams’ is a nod to psychedelia, and the vibrancy of youth culture.
The Club Kid culture seems to be repeating itself within the youth psyche, making it relevant by mixing iconic ideals with modern casual wear.
Each look has a vibrant yet disheveled undertone, with sexual images being represented within prints and bold colours. These images have been placed within the garments to encourage each wearer to embrace their innermost desires, and free themselves of their own repression. The Lucid Dream that UNDERAGE has envisioned, is where members of society have become slaves to their own notions of identity which is why the collection is in fact based on Erik Erikson’s ‘Four Stages of the Identity Crisis’.
Distressed denim, in lieu of that classic 80s acid washed look, may seem slightly ubiquitous, yet this collection seems to utilise the fabric in a unique manner. Denim mixed with shirts, structured tailoring, with bright prints and embroidery create new possibilities for the distressed denim trend that has dominated our closets for the past few decades. Showcasing new ways of manipulating fabrics, UNDERAGE is considering the future of fashion by enhancing the consumer’s liberation from the current identity crisis that’s imposed on them by themselves.
This empowering womenswear has an androgynous feel, with ‘transformation’ being a key theme within the collection. With UNDERAGE’s ambitious desire to disrupt the conventional way women feel in clothes, the collection deconstructs day-wear, recreating it with aspects that are completely reimagined.
Ying Shen, the head designer for UNDERAGE initially studied graphic design focussing on multiple disciplines including: film, animation and 3D modelling, before coming to London to pursue fashion. UNDERAGE is a British contemporary brand with Asian roots that celebrates the irony and romanticism born from the merging of two juxtaposing cultures. Unconventionality, empowering women, androgyny and avant-garde composition make UNDERAGE a truly unique brand with a bright future ahead of them.
