Upcoming fashion capital: Moscow

Russia’s fashion week took place in Moscow from the 11th to the 16th of March. The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week set Russian fashion on the global map and has been running for over fifteen years, and just finished its 32nd season.

Moscow fashion week 2016

MBFW is the biggest fashion event in eastern Europe and has presented over 400 hundred designers and brands. This season several collections were influenced by the 90s, but catwalks also presented upcoming designer’s individuality and identity. We have had a look at a few of the brands presented at their Autumn/Winter 2016 fashion week.

Ksenia Knyazeva

Knyazeva launched her first collection in 2010 and her brand is known for its ‘Russian grace’. The founder and designer graduated with a degree in literature and culture, but she started to draw sketches of the dresses that she was reading about, and that is how her designer career started out.

Igor Gulyaev

The fashion house was founded in 2009 by the designer with the same name. His brand is influenced by his almost two decades of experience in the fur industry. Gulyaev have won awards for being the ‘best fur designer’ and ‘Russian name for couture’.

Viva Vox

The fashion house has been around since 1997 and is focused on haute couture. Oleg Evseev became the creative director in 2005 and he is well known for his use of prints, fur and leather. His autumn/winter 2016 collection was inspired by the Russian film ‘Slave of Love’ and the 90s shell-like silhouettes.

Ivka

Moscow based brand founded in 2014 by the also creative director, Anastasia Gassi. She graduated from London’s Central Saint Martin’s College and started out as a painter before she decided to go in another direction, and launched her own brand. Gassi is a big believer that ‘less is more’ and her collections are very minimalistic. Her latest collection was inspired by music, and she had the artist Natalia Simakova to sing live during her show.

Bella Potemkina

Potemkina is known for her handmade and high-quality clothing. The founder and creative director wanted to be a ballet dancer, and the movements and dresses very much influenced her designs.
