It’s the end of an era as Zac Posen closes House of Z, his namesake label founded in 2001 that was loved by celebrities including Katie Holmes, Rihanna and Winnie Harlow.
On November 1st, Womens Wear Daily reported that Zac Posen would be shuttering his eponymous label immediately, with a press release stating that the company had “determined to cease business operations and carry out an orderly disposition of its assets.”
In conversation with WWD, Posen described the closure as “surprising,” explaining, “we were in a sale process and ran out of time.” It was reported in April of this year that investment firm Yucaipa Cos. was looking to sell off its majority stake in the business. “I’ve been personally trying to find the right partner for some time, but time ran out, and the difficult climate out there… it’s not an easy time in our industry,” Posen said in a candid interview with Vogue.
The closure means that the SS20 collection shown in September will not be shipped.
Following the announcement that his label would be ceasing business, Posen thanked his team – who were notified of the closure on the morning of November 1st – in a personal statement on Instagram.
“I want to express my appreciation for my extraordinary team and for all those who have stood by me and the brand,” Posen said. “I remain incredibly proud of what we created and hopeful for the future.”

To say thank you – and hopefully, see you soon – to a designer whose creations lit up the red carpet for over 18 years, we take a look back at some of his most extraordinary and iconic designs.
That Claire Danes Light-Up Cinderella Dress
This dress is just as iconic now as it was in 2016, when Claire Danes donned it on the MET Gala red carpet. According to Posen, the dress took 600 hours to make, having LED lights and 30 mini battery packs sewn into its lining to make it glow.
Jourdan Dunn’s Futuristic Floral Fantasy
A MET Gala patron, for the 2019 event Posen dressed Katie Holmes, Julia Garner, Jourdan Dunn, Nina Dobrev and Deepika Padukone – but it was Dunn’s 3D-printed rose-inspired dress that stole the show. Made of 21 individual 3D-printed rose petals attached to a titanium frame, the dress was equal parts innovative and gorgeous.
Aja Naomi King at Cannes Film Festival
Aja Naomi King’s ethereal Zac Posen gown, worn to the premiere of A Hidden Life at the 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2019, safely cemented her place as one of the festival’s best dressed. The jaw-dropping design featured dreamy layers of tulle complemented by a plunging neckline and intricate embellishment.
Rihanna’s Showstopping Ensembles
Every time Rihanna has worn Zac Posen, the singer displays her multifaceted style by pushing aside her streetwear edge for total haute couture, in all it’s voluptuousness. Wearing ZP for the her annual Diamond Ball and numerous other red carpet appearances, this video of Rih twirling in Posen’s studio broke the internet.
Winnie Harlow’s Ballerina-esque Gown
Winnie Harlow wore two custom Zac Posen gowns to the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party in September 2019. The first, a striking voluminous ruffled ball gown, was inspired by the New York City ballet, Posen told People.
Princess Eugenie’s Classic Second Wedding Dress
Posen’s creations are literally good enough for royalty, as he was given the coveted task of designing Princess Eugenie’s second wedding dress for her marriage to Jack Brooksbank in October 2018. The result was a classically elegant gown that blew us away.

Every now and then you meet somebody who just knocks your socks off. This last year I got to know a young lady who possessed natural elegance, a heart of gold and sophisticated humor. My studio and I had the honor (and the best time) collaborating with her on her special gown. Best of all she is dedicated to using her privilege to help our world and its people with her project @the_anti_slavery_collective. Happy Birthday! @princesseugenie ✨
And pretty much every ZP outfit worn by Katie Holmes
Actress Katie Holmes’ incredible friendship with the designer has brought countless stunning fashion moments with it. From the MET Gala to the cover of the Hollywood Reporter (pictured below), this match made in heaven will go down in fashion history.
